Ambury Farm

Ambury Farm

As part of our Connected Community Day, We had a discussion with the learners. We asked

How will the animals survive?

Ambury Farm is right next to a volcano?
If it exploded, Ambury Farm is right in its path!

How would we protect the animals?
How could we prepare for a disaster?
What do we need to know?

Learners Voice: The learners decided to take them to a safe place (maybe in the barn)and we have to give them lots of food and water. We have to give them cuddle and say its alright.
We watched a couple of videos about a volcanic eruption. We wondered, in case if they catch fire on their wool what do we do? The learners said we have to squirt water on them.

In the farm, we fed the sheep, goat, and chicken. We pat the cow while milking. We learned the time of shearing the sheep and how to look after their bottoms from flies and the infection created by them. We watched how they were cleaning, shearing and take off the dirty stuff around their bottom.
We made butter using cream and it was fun to have a race in between our groups. we had our morning tea using those butter, it was yummy. There was a pig gave birth to 13 piglets. They were adorable and we watched them taken care by their mummy pig and we watched the mummy drinking lots water to give milk for her babies.
It was a great experience for the learners to interact with the animals and how do we look after them. We were able to understand the nature of their behavior and how to take care of them. Some of the learners were not confident to feed the animals or pat them, but gradually with lots of encouragement, they were able to interact with them.
By the end of the day, it started to rain, thunder and lightning. Some of the learners thought that the volcano was erupting and they wanted to run away.

What did I learn?
This is the first time with the learners going to the farm and I am not a fan of animals. I have learned how to deal with the learners when they were scared of animals and interact with them.

What Next?
We talked about the animals, but I did not prepare the learners emotionally to take care of themselves in the case of a volcanic eruption. I will prepare the learners physically and emotionally how to look after themselves.
