Spiral of Inquiry New Professional Learning

What?
We did some new learning in our spiral of inquiry

So what?
I learnt how the literacy hub and learning progression will help the learners to improve their writing. I learnt how to include the boys in writing based on their interests. I wondered how do I include my high need learners in my writing group and support them. I have planned to give some hands on learning so that they will remember and write a sentence based on their hands on learning.

Now what?
I have planned to include in my planning, so that I could see the progress in writing
After the learners prove to me that they use the skills learnt from the literacy hub in their writing, they update their literacy progressions.

Communication for success

What?
I have attended a workshop to learn more about the learner's who are in special need

So What?
We talked about what do the special need learners expect from us and how do we respond to them. Some times we have to make time for them to meet their needs and need to learn how to relieve stress. We need to have a regular chat with their parents to understand their daily routine and help them where they need support. We discussed what needs to be discussed with the parents and how do we support them that they will feel valued in our environment.

Now what?
I have decided to include in my plan to support the learners who are in special need and create some time to give extra care.

Assessment 2018

What?
We talked about different types of assessment and how we could include in our assessment system to make it better and it works well in our day to day teaching and learning experience. We worked out how well these assessment system works for our learning habitat. What next? We will discuss as a team to figure out how it could work in our learning habitat and how well we could understand where the learners are at their level.

So What?
We discussed the 7 principles of learning
Encourage learners engagement
Learning is social and collaborative
Be secure
Challenging for each learner not overloaded

We also discussed
What are non negotiable?
What assessment do we use to group the learners?
How does it look for a target learners?
What do we do with our completed assessment report?

Now What?
We have to look at what assessment is going well and what is not working well.

Spiral of Inquiry 2018

What?
Spiral of Inquiry gives me opportunity to think and work collaboratively with in our team to support the learners and find out what is going on with our learners. It makes me curious and wonder to find reasons and solutions to scaffold our learners learning.

So What?
We worked together in our team to find out the concerns we have with in our habitat. We found out that we have lots of boys struggling to write. We wondered how do we support those learners through play way method based on learners interests.

Next?
We have finished the scanning and we want to go the next phase to do our focussing.

Literacy Progressions

The learners can practice and prove their capabilities.

So What?
It is an excellent site for the learners to enjoy these games and practice independently.
Now What?
Once the learners are confident to do it on their own, I will high light and initial it in the learning progressions.

  3. The technologies are converging
Increase of automation is increasing  unemployment
It increases cyber risk
Increasing lack of trust

We educators need to develop the learners questioning skills on technology from the day one.
What does this have to do with education?
Solving unstructured problems
Working with new information
How can we prepare the learners for the society?
What kind of society we want?

Round Table: Student Well-being
Mindfulness
How to relax effectively
Help them how to deal with emotions, behaviour issues
We need to deal with issues
Deal with self harm

Settling in the morning
Talk about the vision principles

Giving opportunity to share about what happened in the weekend, how did the week go, challenging and what went well in the week and what are you planning to do it in the weekend. It gives lots of opportunity for the learners and LCs to unpack their thinking and making connection between home and school. Giving opportunity for the learners to solve problem.
Educators need to look after themselves to look after the well-being of the learners.

Sheena Cameron- PD on writing

The writing book

Read sentences – clap full stops – helps them recognise capital letters and full stops.

Recognise structure of text types –prepares them to understand and comprehension.

Notice punctuation e.g. narrative – look for speech marks, exclamation mark, punctuation marks.

Notice sentence starters. Make a sentence using one of these.

 Approaches in Writing
M Modelled – watch me and notice – I do
-       Shared – I show you, you help me – We do
-       Guided – kids doing the writing and LC guides, prompts, supports ( writer’s workshop) - work with one group (check on focus for the day & celebrate success) & others do independent - We do
-       Independent – Capable, not so capable – You do
Generating Ideas for writing

Do something, look at things, listen to sounds – story, music
-       Use drama – teacher gives instructions, learners act
-       Video – union of/is strength
-       Video:  the kid should see this – Pygmy seahorse
-       Note taking and videos – put a star next to best note
-       www.the literacy shed.com
-       www.broadpanda.com – kids playing around the world – motivation for writing sentences – great starter
-       Stop at a sentence and get learners to describe a character
-       Talk topic – Would you rather: meet ancestors - past, meet great grandchild – future, Be invisible or be able to fly
-       Writing notebook – learners put topics they want to write about – choose your topic
-       www.gopro - get motivations
-       My  most disgusting dinner
What Next?
Are my Learners writing enough?

I would like to give more opportunities for emergent writers

Learners writing on the wall display to revisit their writing

Writing on topics that engage them

Maths Progression

Today, we learnt about maths progression in our ELT.

Maths hub is linked with maths progressions. We can talk to the learners and update the maths progression. Grey is for learners working collaboratively with others, Green is for group sessions, Orange is for learners working independently and Black is for what learners are able to do by themselves which the learning coach dates and initials.

What Next?
I would like to set tasks in Mathletics and encourage the learners to log into the account regularly

ELL Support Programme

ELL Support Programme by Karyn
Where and what  the learners are doing?
It takes about 20-25 minutes duration for each lesson
It is the time to build the learners language. They learn to make simple sentence in their foundation programme. They learn the structure, concept and track to check whether the language is building up in them.

Quick 60 is based on a cyclic process the new word and skill that is developed today is repeated in the book today, tomorrow, and the next day,  it is also repeated in the Quick write. The new skill and word are repeated for the next few days but not covered in detail by the presenter of the programme.
What Next?
I have gained knowledge about patch play, foundation course and quick 60 programme. I can understand the benefit of putting the learners in this course to develop their language skills. I will assess the learners and giving them extra support at the early stage.

Working collaboratively within our team

iExplore set up
21/2/2018

We started thinking about how to improve our habitat iExplore time as a team. We came up with different ideas and finally  we decided to choose one area based on our strength and improve it. I have chosen the construction  and science area.
We discussed in our end of the day informal meeting, what are the things could be added in our area. We decided to add lots of books around our habitat, so that the learners could access the books related to that topic and extend their learning what they are interested in. For example if we are going to set up the construction area, we decided to display some posters, signs, words related to that area and books. We thought it will help the learners to develop their literacy, numeracy, social, motor and cognitive skills.
We decided, each LC will add their planning in the iExplore doc and write our observation at the end of the day.

What next?
We have noticed the books are finally end up going into the library area. We should talk to the learners to keep the books or resources in the same area. We need to interact with the learners and ask lots of open ended questions to extend their learning. We need to role model the learners how to take care of the books and how to use it to gather information.

Call back day #1, 24th Jan 2018

Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument by Luke

It helps me to play with my strength and with my teams strengths.
It helps individuals to make changes to their own actions by understanding themselves.

I was able to understand my strength and weaknesses and how I was dealing with my colleagues. It was really funny to find out myself. This workshop helped me to reflect on my own practice and how I could work on my strength to support my team, or stop when i have my bad day.

What next?
It is really good to understand my colleagues strength and work based on their strength and understand their feelings. Maybe I could share my strength with my team to work collaboratively to make the team stronger by supporting each other.
