Te Reo Maori with our Learners

Te Reo Maori with the Learners

I was planning to use Te Reo Maori with the learners. I gradually started practising those words what i am going to use with our learners. Once i gained confidence, i started using with them. The learners were quite quick to grasp those words and they started using with other learners. I got encouraged when i heard the learners using with other learners.
So i decided to introduce more of Maori songs, dances and their culture with the learners. The above Slides were my iExpereince planning. We started learning some songs and it was easy for the learners to remember the numbers and colours when they learnt through songs. When i tested them, some learners were singing  the song to find the answer. It was fun learning about Maori culture and their dances like poi and Haka. The Rakau was the best and we tried to use it in different ways.

It was a wonderful opportunity for me to work with our team to plan and what are we going to to do. We worked it out the ratio of the learners and adult, cost for the trip, safety and the timings.

What Next
I am looking forward to go the ambury farm. We have to sort out the list of group with the adult ratio. We are waiting for the signmee. We will work it out as soon as we get the consent.

Literacy support
How do we break the mindset of ‘I can’t read’
We can’t judge the learners based on the ability of reading and writing

‘Failure is not an option’

ICT with learners
Just leaving the technology in front of the learners is not going to work.
How do we ignite the learner's creativity, problem-solving, etA college

Textbooks are designed for the average
School drop out was increasing because lots of them were above average...if we support them it would it happen
We need to reduce the achievement gap...we need to teach the tools
We need to prepare not repair
How do we prepare our environment for the learners?
We prepare to design our environment based on different types of learners
We need to give power for our learners

Universal design for learning
Multiple Means of Engagement

Multiple Means of Representation

Provide options for:
presenting content in multiple formats to support understanding
Multiple Means of Expression

Provide options for:
expression and demonstrating understanding

NZ system of education is good, they already thought about it
We tend to look down as LCs
We should give power for the learners to access based on their ability

Technology should be easy to use and fun
Just imagine folding a fitted sheet???
Literacy and technology matters for the learners
We are focussed on technology and forget about the kids...we have to focus on learners. Growth mindset helps us to adopt new ideas and try it out will help us to grow.

The most crucial factor is?

by the ability to
read and write

Writing is the most challenging task we ask of our kids. Kids avoid failure at all cost.

Technology is wonderful when we use it well.
Young learners learn as they play around with it. Some learners use it well, others may not. But they might start with fewer tools but they gradually start using it.
It allows learners to use their voice. Dyslexic learners are very good at talking than reading or writing. This read and write app helps them to talk and record it. Then they can listen and fix the writing.

Voice Note

Good tool to use it
Good for developing oral language
Learners to develop a pencil case
Learners can ask questions and get clarified

Collecting highlights

Help to scaffold their writing
Highlights different concept in different colours and drop them in in google docs
Typing is challenging for the learners and editing more challenging for the learners

Re wordify website - can tell you the reading age of a website. Can use it to reword websites to make them simpler for children to understand.

Text-to-Speech - setting in computers that allow it to read passages of text to students aloud. Provides immediate access for a lot of people. Being read to 1 hour a day exposes you to 4 million words a year. By the age of 14, an avid reader reads 400x more text than non-avid readers. Use as a proofing tool!

Read&Write - installs a toolbar. Use bit.ly/FreeRW to sign up for a free subscription for teachers.

OCR (optical character recognition) - getting paperwork onto the computer.

Snapverter - change photos to pdfs

Equatio - allows your to create maths symbols very easily

WriQ - Tool to analyse writing

What Next
It is a good opportunity for me to learn about different apps and how to use it with the learners. I have learnt how to use the read and write app, so that i can assign for the learners. The learners with reading and writing difficulty also develop the interest to use the tools through fun way.

Problem Solving -EOD 6/6/17

Educator Only Day
A Mathematical Journey- Heath McNeil

Mark H. Ashcraft defines Maths anxiety as ‘a feeling of tension, apprehension, or fear that interferes with math performance” (2002, p.1)
Why?
Mindset
Challenge to take risk
Find a strategy to solve
Get the answer
Use recipes
Directions to prepare
Follow recipes
Maths should be like
Need curiosity
Being capable
We should be connected  and
We should work collaboratively

Inspire people and get engaged because it’s everywhere.

Maths adventures by Ian Stevens

Something to try
Something to think
Something to modify based on my own understanding

Why maths is important?
It’s everywhere and everything
Work out the time for our life
Budgeting

Teaching a way of thinking, organising a way of solving problems
Are the learners thinking the way it supposed to be
We should make the learners to be confident, connected, actively involved and lifelong learners
Maths is all about making sense of the world

Think??? How am i teaching? Did i make the learners being connected, confident and actively involved??/
Are the learners inclined to use mathematics effectively at home, at work and in the community.

I see it
I get it
I can explain to others

Give opportunity for the learners to struggle
Don't afraid to give activities for the learners to struggle
Push the learners hard,
Give them the next level, they might try
Make sure you stand by them and support them but encourage them to try, not to do it for them

Encourage learners to make their own bump game
Learners to learn self-management
Learners are having issues with 10+, use the bump game which helps them to understand better.

Learners will be challenged to round up the number, find the place value

Next Step
I would like to challenge the learners with more challenging problem-solving maths so that it will be interesting for the learners to unpack it. I always wondered how do I introduce dice with our learners, but today I understood I could do lots of different problems solving to challenge our learners. I will ask the learners to throw the dice and find the before and after numbers. They could match the ten frames with the number.
