Literacy support
How do we break the mindset of ‘I can’t read’
We can’t judge the learners based on the ability of reading and writing

‘Failure is not an option’

ICT with learners
Just leaving the technology in front of the learners is not going to work.
How do we ignite the learner's creativity, problem-solving, etA college
ege is a place where a professor’s lecture notes go straight to the students’ lecture notes, without passing through the brains of either”
Textbooks are designed for the average
School drop out was increasing because lots of them were above average...if we support them it would it happen
We need to reduce the achievement gap...we need to teach the tools
We need to prepare not repair
How do we prepare our environment for the learners?
We prepare to design our environment based on different types of learners
We need to give power for our learners
Things are changing...some universities are looking at the portfolio than exam marks

Universal design for learning
Multiple Means of Engagement

Provide options for:
student agency
learning in different ways

Multiple Means of Representation

Provide options for:
presenting content in multiple formats to support understanding
Multiple Means of Expression

Provide options for:
expression and demonstrating understanding

NZ system of education is good, they already thought about it
We tend to look down as LCs
We should give power for the learners to access based on their ability

Technology should be easy to use and fun
Just imagine folding a fitted sheet???
Literacy and technology matters for the learners
We are focussed on technology and forget about the kids...we have to focus on learners. Growth mindset helps us to adopt new ideas and try it out will help us to grow.
How do we support the learners who are struggling?

Technology is too powerful not to have a plan
The most crucial factor is?
students no longer
need to be defined only
by the ability to
read and write

Writing is the most challenging task we ask of our kids. Kids avoid failure at all cost.

Technology is wonderful when we use it well.
Young learners learn as they play around with it. Some learners use it well, others may not. But they might start with fewer tools but they gradually start using it.
It allows learners to use their voice. Dyslexic learners are very good at talking than reading or writing. This read and write app helps them to talk and record it. Then they can listen and fix the writing.

Voice Note

Good tool to use it
Good for developing oral language
Learners to develop a pencil case
Learners can ask questions and get clarified

Collecting highlights

Help to scaffold their writing
Highlights different concept in different colours and drop them in in google docs
Typing is challenging for the learners and editing more challenging for the learners

Re wordify website - can tell you the reading age of a website. Can use it to reword websites to make them simpler for children to understand.

Text-to-Speech - setting in computers that allow it to read passages of text to students aloud. Provides immediate access for a lot of people. Being read to 1 hour a day exposes you to 4 million words a year. By the age of 14, an avid reader reads 400x more text than non-avid readers. Use as a proofing tool!

What Next
It is a good opportunity for me to learn about different apps and how to use it with the learners. I have learnt how to use the read and write app, so that i can assign for the learners. The learners with reading and writing difficulty also develop the interest to use the tools through fun way.
